Help transform the global state of PHC

Unlocking the full potential of primary health care as a vehicle for universal health coverage requires the support of everyone with a stake in achieving health for all. Allies Improving PHC reflects this potential by bringing together global and local organizations representing engaged citizens, patients, health workers, international NGOs, advocates, researchers and representatives from the private sector to work together.

The PHCPI Community of Practice provided a space to dialogue with peers around the world working to leverage, maintain, and strengthen PHC during the pandemic and into the future through an Online Forum and facilitated Learning Exchanges in collaboration with the Joint Learning Network for Universal Health Coverage.

In 2022, 13 organizations were selected to receive micro-grants to support their primary health care advocacy efforts. These groups came together in March 2023 to share impact, lessons learned, and calls to action from these projects. After the Allies Improving PHC launched an Open Letter in September 2022 - one year out from multiple health-related High-Level Meetings and the SDG Summit - a total of 239 organizations and 157 individuals from 65 countries signed on to urge leaders to "make this time different" by prioritizing primary health care as a 3-for-1 investment in universal health coverage, health security and better health and well-being. Advocate. Community Health Worker. Family Doctor. Policymaker. In early 2023, a group of primary health care champions in Kisumu, Kenya opened their doors to share how they are making their communities stronger with primary health care. This video series aims to share their stories and lessons with the world.

In 2018, world leaders endorsed the Declaration of Astana, marking their commitment to strengthening primary health care (PHC) as the cornerstone of resilient health systems and the most effective pathway towards health for all. The COVID-19 crisis made fulfilling these commitments even more urgent: we need strong health systems that can prevent, detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks, while ensuring that everyone, everywhere has access to equitable, high-quality care at every stage of life. Our #StrongerWithPHC campaign strove to renew the world's commitment to PHC as the foundation of health systems that keep people healthy and safe.

PHCPI, in partnership with the Allies Improving PHC hosted an official parallel session at AHAIC 2021: From Attention to Action on Health Systems: Driving Accountability for PHC in the Wake of COVID-19. This session featured a roundtable discussion and practical “teach-in,” during which PHC advocates and country representatives will lent their perspectives on using data and measurement for advocacy, sharing strategies for engaging with global and national decision-making bodies and spotlighting successful communications tactics to catalyze critical investment in PHC during and after the pandemic.
